Self-exclusion

How the self-exclusion program works

The Halifax and Sydney casinos both fall under the Casino Nova Scotia Voluntary Self-Exclusion Program. Its reach extends beyond the gaming floors to include the restaurants and entertainment venues. Terms can be indefinite or set at 6 months, one year or three years. Prizes cannot be won by a self-excluded person.

And who starts it? Any casino staff member can, and so can the Responsible Gambling Resource Centre at the Halifax casino. Mira's advice: the nearest staff member is enough to begin. For questions beforehand, the resource centre answers at 902-424-8663.

One habit

Decide it over dinner

Mira suggests settling two things over dinner, before the show starts: how much the floor gets, and the time you will walk out. Saying both out loud to whoever came along makes them harder to stretch once the curtain is down. Leave the card you would use for extra cash at home. Then the decision at the table stays the one made over dinner, not one made at midnight.

Questions

Can you call the crisis line at 3 a.m.?

Yes, at any hour. Nova Scotia Health's Provincial Mental Health and Addictions Crisis Line, 1-888-429-8167, answers 24 hours a day, every day. The call costs nothing and stays confidential, and gambling worries are part of what it handles.

Does casino self-exclusion have to end?

Not unless you choose a fixed term. The Casino Nova Scotia Voluntary Self-Exclusion Program offers 6 months, one year, three years or an indefinite term.

Is there anyone to talk to inside the casino?

The Responsible Gambling Resource Centre is at the Halifax casino. It offers confidential support and self-exclusion information, and its number is 902-424-8663.
